Jane Austen for the new millennium

If you haven’t seen the Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube yet, you really need to do so right now. Go ahead; I’ll wait.

Pride and Prejudice
gets updated in this series of videos where Lizzie Bennet is a grad student doing a vlog for her master’s thesis. Her pushy mother is dying for Lizzie (and her sisters Jane and Lydia) to marry rich men, but Lizzie is more focused on her career. Then the handsome and eligible med student Bing Lee comes to town…and they’re off!

I’m pretty addicted to these videos at the moment. The acting is generally solid, and the modern-day update is very clever. The story follows the book fairly closely while still making it work in a contemporary setting. Plus, the clothes are adorable! New videos are posted on Mondays and Thursdays; right now Lizzie is visiting her best friend, Charlotte, and she’s just had a surprising conversation with a certain Darcy…

Bottom line: if you’re an Austen fan, you won’t want to miss these!

Secret Santa Exchange at The Broke and the Bookish

The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time for some cheer and good will — and nothing says cheer and good will like fabulous bookish presents! Luckily, The Broke and the Bookish is hosting a Secret Santa gift exchange to spread the love (and awesome gifts) among book bloggers. Once you sign up, TBTB will assign you a Secret Santa, for whom you’ll buy gifts based on their wishlist and other preferences. Then you mail them their package and receive your own bundle of holiday joy in return. If you’re interested, click here for details about how to participate. The deadline to sign up is November 17. I’m looking forward to finding that perfect gift for my Secret Santa!

Trials and tribulations

So my computer died over the weekend…apparently the motherboard is shot. Huzzah! Hence my longer-than-usual absence from this blog. I hope to be back soon, although posting will likely be spotty until I can scrape up the funds for a new computer.

In the meantime, I saw a guy dressed as Fifty Shades of Grey for Halloween today! He was wearing normal business clothes, but he had paint chips of varying shades of gray attached to them. It was excellent.

Anyway, happy Halloween to all, and I hope to post some reviews in the next few days!

Library sale, part two

Day 2 of the library sale was a little less exciting than day 1. I went with a friend, which was fun but also limiting because she wanted to look at different things (and is also not quite as book-obsessed as I am). But I did manage to pick up two more books:

Empire State by Adam ChristopherWinter in June by Kathryn Miller Haines

Adam Christopher, Empire State — I’ve heard good things about this one, and it sounds like nothing I’ve read before: a kind of sci fi/alternate history/noir hybrid.

Kathryn Miller Haines, Winter in June — I really liked the first book in the Rosie Winter series, The War Against Miss Winter, so I’ve been on the lookout for the rest of the series. I believe this is book #3.

Library sale!

My local public library is having its semi-annual book sale this weekend! Naturally I headed over there this morning, and I came back with the following:

The Hunter by Richard StarkPortuguese Irregular Verbs by Alexander…The Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony…

Richard Stark, The Hunter — A friend recommended this series to me. I haven’t read much noir, but it’s a genre I’m interested in exploring.

Alexander McCall Smith, Portuguese Irregular Verbs — I couldn’t resist the title/cover combo on this one. Also, the plot looks zany and fun.

Anthony Berkeley, The Poisoned Chocolates Case — I’m a sucker for Golden Age mysteries, and this one looks really good!

A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury by Edith…The Daughter of Time by Josephine TeyMy One and Only by Kristan Higgins

Edith Pargeter, A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury — I love Edith Pargeter, a.k.a. Ellis Peters. Her Cadfael mysteries are wonderful, so I’m excited to read another of her historical novels set in the Middle Ages.

Josephine Tey, The Daughter of Time — I’ve read this before, and honestly, I didn’t love it the first time. I was expecting more of a traditional mystery, which this book definitely is not. But so many people love it that I decided to give it another chance. It was only 50 cents, so why not?

Kristan Higgins, My One and Only — I’m slowly accumulating Higgins’ romances. What can I say? They’re light, fun, enjoyable reads.

I’m going back tomorrow afternoon with a friend, so maybe I’ll have more to add to this list later!

National Buy a Book Day

You guys, apparently it’s National Buy a Book Day!

Logo by Clifton Hill

The concept is pretty simple: “On September 7th of each year, go to a book store (in reality or online) and buy a book. Any store will do. Any book will do.” The website (to which I’ve linked above) says that the purpose of Buy a Book Day is “educating the American people on the importance of books to our culture.” Well, that sounds like a worthy cause; guess I’d better hit the Barnes & Noble after work today and buy a book! (Like I need an excuse, right?)

Hello, world!

Greetings, Internet void. I’m Christina, formerly of Christina reads! Blogging about books has been a hobby of mine for several years now, but lately I’ve been in a slump. I don’t read as much as I used to, and I haven’t been inspired to sound off about what I’m reading. I figure that a new blog on a new platform may help to regalvanize my love of reading and reviewing. Fingers crossed!

Thus, “You Book Me All Night Long” is my fresh start. I’ll mostly be talking about books: reviewing the ones I’ve read, asking for recommendations, signing up for reading challenges (to which I am addicted), etc. Occasionally I may also talk about music and TV, which are two other ways I enjoy spending my time. So I hope you’ll bear with me as I air my completely biased and subjective opinions about literature and other forms of entertainment. I look forward to hearing from you!
