Contrary to what the weather gods would have us believe, it’s springtime once again…which means it’s time for Carl’s annual Once Upon a Time Challenge!
The purpose of the challenge is to celebrate the joy and wonder of spring by reading books in the following four genres: fantasy, fairy tales, mythology, and folklore. There are many different ways to participate in the challenge, but I’m going to aim for Quest the First, which requires me to read 5 books that fit into the above genres.
I’m hoping at least to read Mary Stewart’s Merlin books, which would certainly fit within the mythology category. Also on my “maybe” list are The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen, Spirit’s End by Rachel Aaron, Graceling by Kristin Cashore, Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier, and Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire. Looking forward to a magical spring!
oh wow it’s been eons since I read the whole Merlin/Arthur trilogy by Stewart! I will reallylook forward to those reviews if you get to those books!
Already reading The Crystal Cave! 🙂 I have never read these books before, but I’m a big fan of Mary Stewart, so I have high hopes!
I’ve heard very good things about Mary Stewart’s Merlin books, and I read Child of the Prophecy a few months ago–excellent! I’ve got to look up the next book in the Sevenwaters series so I can keep reading…
I’ve only read Daughter of the Forest and Son of the Shadows so far, but I really loved both of them. I don’t know why I’m moving through the series so slowly! But it’s nice to know that I still have 3 or 4 more books ahead of me.
Love Sarah Addison Allen! I wish she would write another book! I’m going very light this year, and really only want to get Anasi Boys read.
Good luck with your choices
According to SAA’s website, she has a new book coming out this year! No sight of it on Amazon yet, though…
Have fun with Anansi Boys! I really need to read some more Gaiman.
I would like to reread the Merlin books by Stewart. It has been ages. Maybe next year. My list is already too long this year.
Haha, I definitely know that feeling!
I’m currently looking forward to any sign of spring, but I’m definitely excited about the magical touch already upon us 🙂 And thank you for reminding me about Graceling. I’ve been meaning to read that one for ages.
Ugh, I’m with you — winter has been around for far too long!
I’ve had Graceling on my shelves for a really long time…I really should try and get to it this year.
