Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: I don’t give a damn ’bout my reputation

meme - tune in tuesday katelynLast week I observed that all my Tune in Tuesday picks thus far had been male artists. In fact, the vast majority of musicians I listen to are male. I’m not sure why that is, to be honest (my current theory is sexist social conditioning). But whatever the reason, today I’ve decided to honor a woman who rocks — and you know it’s true, because she’s a 2013 nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Here’s Joan Jett and the Blackhearts with “Bad Reputation”:

Interesting! I can’t explain my preference at all. Maybe it’s because many songs by female artists that are on the radio now are so shallow — they all seem to be about clubbing and partying! In general, I prefer songs that are a bit more interesting.

Considering that a good number of the artists I like don’t always sing in English (French, Latin, Spanish, Hindi, Korean, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and various created languages are all well-represented in my music library), I pay way more attention to interesting melody and haunting harmony rather than lyrical content. For songs in English, though, I do prefer deeper content than clubbing and such.

Well, that makes a lot of sense. Most of the music I listen to has English lyrics, so I tend to get distracted by them sometimes. I do think melody and rhythm are important too, though, and I’ll forgive a bad lyric if the song is really catchy!

Great pick!! Joan Jett kicks ass, and this one always makes me want to raise my fist and say, “Girl power!” Or “Screw you” LOL! But really, it still rocks hard 🙂
Hope you have a great one,
