Last week I observed that all my Tune in Tuesday picks thus far had been male artists. In fact, the vast majority of musicians I listen to are male. I’m not sure why that is, to be honest (my current theory is sexist social conditioning). But whatever the reason, today I’ve decided to honor a woman who rocks — and you know it’s true, because she’s a 2013 nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Here’s Joan Jett and the Blackhearts with “Bad Reputation”:

Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: Some shrill sad cannonade
So I know I’m a bit late to jump on this bandwagon, but Pandora has really been rocking my world lately! I highly recommend the Mumford and Sons station, where I’ve discovered a lot of really good songs — and this week’s Tune in Tuesday pick is one of them. Here’s “Serpentine” by Chris Bathgate:
I like its melancholy, dreamlike quality.
Also, I’m realizing that all my Tune in Tuesday picks thus far have featured male artists. I’ll have to post about some ladies who rock one of these days!
Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: I forgot I needed God like a big brother
So this is a bit awkward, but I may have discovered this song through someone else’s Tune in Tuesday pick once upon a time! If so, I’ve forgotten who you are, and I’m sorry for stealing your song — but you obviously have good taste! 🙂 If I didn’t get it from a Tune in Tuesday participant, I probably heard it on a movie soundtrack. It’s a fairly simple song, but the guitar riff is catchy. And so for this week’s Tune in Tuesday, I bring you “Returning to the Fold” by The Thermals:
Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: If I had a wish, or even a choice…
Time for another Tune in Tuesday! My pick this week, “Sound of Your Voice” by the Barenaked Ladies, is an obvious choice because I’ve had it stuck in my head all week! Something about the simplicity of the lyrics or the old-school doo-wop feel just burrowed its way into my brain. Also, BNL was one of my absolute favorite bands in middle school and high school, so there’s a certain amount of nostalgia as well. Remember “One Week”? I actually used to know all the words to that! But anyway, here’s “Sound of Your Voice”:
Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: Singing death or glory

For this week’s Tune in Tuesday, I’m going with “Where We Belong” by Lostprophets. I first heard this song while watching “Chalet Girl” (a cute little rom-com starring Felicity Jones, who was also in “Northanger Abbey” — there’s your Jane Austen connection for the day!). It’s got a lot of energy and triumph behind it — perfect for the climactic moment of that movie. Enjoy!
Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: Is this your name or a doctor’s eye chart?
For this week’s Tune in Tuesday, I decided to go a little ’90s-tastic. I have a nostalgic soft spot for ’90s music, despite how cheesy it can often be. I didn’t discover this artist until a couple of years ago, though…I guess I was too busy rocking out to Barenaked Ladies and Matchbox Twenty at the time. Anyway, I give you “Dyslexic Heart” by Paul Westerberg:
I like this song! It’s got a bouncy, uplifting feel to it, and the lyrics are cute and clever. (The video is also fun, due to the awesome fashions.) I really like Paul Westerberg’s voice, too; he was also the lead singer of the Replacements, a very cool band from the ’80s and ’90s. I’m exploring more of his & their work, and I’m very impressed thus far. Hope you enjoy!
Tune in Tuesday with Katelyn: The balcony is on the make
So I haven’t done a Tune in Tuesday for a while, but my excuse is that GReads! hasn’t been doing it either! School and life have kept her busy, which is entirely understandable. But while she’s on a temporary Tune in Tuesday hiatus, she has passed the torch to Kate’s Tales of Books and Bands. So thankfully, this lovely opportunity to share music every week and discover some new songs still exists!
This week I’m sharing songs by an artist whom I don’t quite know if I like yet! I’ve listened to several songs by Tom Waits now, some of which I really like and some of which I find bizarre (to say the least). He’s an acquired taste, but it’s a taste I’m really hoping to acquire. So here is an amusing song called “The Piano Has Been Drinking”:
And another, sweeter song called “I Want You”:
Tune in Tuesday: Behind the movie scenes
Alas, it’s the final Tune in Tuesday for a while, so I’ve been racking my brain to come up with the perfect song. Oddly enough, though, the one that popped into my head isn’t one of my all-time favorites. In fact, while I like the song fine, I hardly ever listen to it. But something about it makes me smile and think nostalgically of middle school — because you guys, I was totally in 7th grade when this came out. At any rate, I give you “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop. Enjoy!
Tune in Tuesday: Hey glad girls
For this week’s Tune in Tuesday, I’m featuring “Glad Girls” by Guided by Voices. I first heard it on an episode of “How I Met Your Mother” (4×22, “Right Place, Right Time,” to be precise). It always puts me in a good mood!
Tune in Tuesday: They wanna get my —
For this week’s Tune in Tuesday, I’ve picked The Black Keys’ new hit, “Gold on the Ceiling.” I really like this band’s sound; they’ve got a very distinctive, classic-rock sort of quality. In this particular song, I love the guitar motif just before the chorus. It’s simple and catchy with a strong, driving rhythm — just what good rock should be.
